From the supplier: Lester Thurow, dean of the Alfred P. Sloan School of Management, attributes the weakened competitive position of American banks to the nation's low savings and investment rates. Thurow notes that the low level of domestic savings forces American banks to borrow wholesale internationally to maintain retail lending to Americans. This dependence on foreign funds makes American banks vulnerable to international competition even in domestic markets. It also prevents American banks from competing effectively in global markets as they are competing with European and Japanese banks that can source their funds from local savers at a rate lower than that prevailing in international capital markets.
